Ulster American Treasures: The Migration Story is a new online publication that pulls together standout records from the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) to trace 250 years of connection between Ulster and the United States. Curated as part of the USA–NI250 programme, it uses original letters, voyage records, petitions, business papers, and other archival sources to follow migrants, ideas, and networks across the Atlantic.
Launched this week in Washington, DC, the project is one of a series of initiatives reflecting on the 250th anniversary of US independence and its connections to the island of Ireland. The launch highlights how Ulster’s emigrants and their descendants shaped politics, religion, and community life in the early republic, while also prompting new questions about land, loyalty, and belonging. Ulster American Treasures offers a fresh entry point into the Ulster strand of the Irish-American story, and it’s a resource that can feed into classroom work, public talks, and community projects on both sides of the Atlantic.
